OFFICIAL NEWSLETTER OF IKHAYALETHEMBA
VILLAGE, NOMZAMO - November & December 2008
Once again we are rushing towards the end of another year - a year in which we have been greatly
blessed at Ikhayalethemba Village.
OUR CHILDREN
At present, we have 29 children in full-time care at our Village. A baby boy, Yofezo, of 1 month,
joined us at the beginning of October. In addition to this we have also admitted mentally disabled
twin girls of 10 years old.
Zizipho Maga, a lovely 12 year old girl who suffers from juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, has also
been a part of our family for a short while. She is in a great deal of pain and is in a wheelchair.
However, she remains sweet natured and is much loved by all of us. Because of the severity of
her medical condition we are unable to give her adequate care and she is in the process of being
moved to a properly equipped medical institution.
Little Thuso Tsumakai is a beautiful child who was brought to our Village
recently. Sadly, little Thuso is blind. There is, however, some good news –
in the last few months an incredible group of Occupational, Physical and
Speech Therapists, known as Senecio, a local NGO, have been working at
the Village for some 2 months now. According to their diagnosis this is a
condition that can be reversed through therapy and there is a very good
chance that Thuso will be cured of his blindness.
The therapists are working with all our handicapped children and we are
extremely grateful to them for this amazing service.
SEWING PROJECT
In February this year, we started with basic sewing classes at the Training Centre, with a view to
involving and empowering the local community and also, to generate some much needed income for
the Village. To-date we have completed 2 courses which have been a great success thanks to
volunteers who were prepared to teach the ladies the sewing skills. The next course will be run by
a young graduate clothing designer, Unathi Gulube, from Nomzamo. We are hoping to develop the
course and fund his salary with the help of Clover Mama Afrika who are currently considering our
application for funding.
BAKERY PROJECT
It is our great desire to become more self-sustainable in the future and with this in mind, we are
working towards establishing a bakery on our premises. This will allow us to provide bread,
muffins and biscuits for our own use at the Village and the excess will be sold to the local
community.
We have approached Eskom who are currently processing our application for funding in this regard.
If successful, we are hoping to be able to launch the project within the next 6 months.
The Bakery will include a shop where the baked goods as well as eggs from our poultry project will
be sold to the local community.
LITERACY PROJECT
We are currently working in conjunction with Project Literacy who are using our Training Centre at
the Village to present literacy classes to the local community. These classes include English, basic
Xhosa-writing and numeracy. We are hoping that this project will encourage the local community to
become more involved in the life of the Village.
A container which will serve as an additional classroom has been purchased with a wonderful
donation raised by Jennifer King and friends, of the Mama Lumka Charity Inc who represent us in
Australia. The money was raised through the hosting of a very glamorous business lunch. We are
extremely grateful to Jennifer for all that she does for us.
“OUR PLACE”
Ikhayalethemba Village has taken on the look of a cosy
and busy little farmyard, with children playing happily and
ducks and chickens busily scratching about for food!
We have, in conjunction with, the Rotary Clubs of
Gordon’s Bay, Walton-on-Thames, England and Lincoln,
Canada developed a Chicken Coop Project to provide eggs
for our family as well as to sell at the “Bakery-to-be”. The
project should be completed and producing by the end of
November 2008.
The trees planted by BATSA staff members are
flourishing and will soon give us some lovely shade.
Our veggie gardens are flourishing and all in all the
Sanctuary is a hive of happy activity and a real example to
the surrounding community.
Our Board of Trustees, staff members, children and all of us at the Nceduluntu Sanctuary Trust
would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has lightened our load this year. We
have been so very blessed in many different ways. As we grow and become more part of the local
community, we hope that we can continue to make a positive difference in their lives as well as the
lives of the children in our care.
May you and your families enjoy a very blessed, peaceful and wonderful
Christmas and a happy and successful 2009.
