OFFICIAL NEWSLETTER OF IKHAYALETHEMBA
VILLAGE, NOMZAMO - June 2009
The winter is slowly settling in and as we look back over the past 6 months, we can once again say
that we have been well and truly blessed here at Ikhayalethemba Village. So, before we go any
further, we would like to extend our most sincere gratitude and appreciation to everyone who has
helped to get new projects up and running and to those who ensure that our children are well cared
for on a day-to-day basis. THANK YOU SO MUCH!
CLOVER MAMA AFRIKA
Clover Mama Afrika recently accepted our project into their fold and since then, they have been
absolutely amazing. They presented a gardening course at the Sanctuary which was attended by
some of our own staff as well as members of the Zola community and this will hopefully bear fruit
in the long term for all who attended.
This billboard was donated by Clover and was erected on the corner
of our site. It welcomes everyone who comes down Solomon Drive
and now you cannot miss the special place where Mama Lumka cares
for the lost children of Nomzamo.
Clover have also been involved in our Sewing Project – they have
given us a sewing machine and overlocker, and they have supplied us
with materials, cottons etc. Nothing has been too much trouble for
these wonderful folk!

OUR CHILDREN
Our sanctuary is growing! We now have 30 children to care for, of
which 10 are babies.
They are a happy bunch, with 6 of them attending “big” school
and the smaller ones attending our Educare Centre during the
day.
We often receive gifts of clothing for the children and nappies
for the babies, and for this we are also very thankful. As you can
see, they are always neat and tidy and well dressed!
MORE ACCOMMODATION
We are especially grateful to the Nedbank Foundation who recently
advised us that they have approved a grant to us to build 3 additional
homes at the village. This will increase our capacity to accommodate 18
more children.
A prestigious architectural practice, Messrs 2AD Space Architects Inc.,
recently approached us to offer their services on a voluntary basis, to
assist us with the development of our project. Wilhelm and Jean Louw
have very kindly offered to design the 3 new houses and future bakery
complex.
CHICKEN COOP PROJECT
Hooray! Our Chicken Coop Project is now up and running. We have
12 chickens that each produce 1 egg a day and they seem to be
very happy in their new “container home”. Wellington, Mama’s
husband, takes good care of the chickens and we hope that before
too long we will be able to move forward to the next phase of the
project.
Our ducks are also very happy now that a pond has been
built for them and the chickens and ducks share a sheltered area
that was recently built for them.
BAKERY PROJECT
The proposed Bakery Project to be built at Ikhayalethemba Village has
certainly aroused great interest, not only locally, but internationally as well.
We are still in the process of raising funds and finalising the design and
hope to have the project built and functioning before the end of 2010.
We would like to express a special word of thanks to the following
organisations who have already committed themselves financially and
materially to the bakery project:
• The Rotary Club of Seaford (UK)
• The Rotary Club of Lincoln (Canada)
• The Rotary Club of Doetinchem (Holland)
• The Rotary Club of Strand (RSA)
• The Rotary Club of Gordon’s Bay (RSA)
• Clover Mama Afrika.
GLOBAL VISION INTERNATIONAL
This company will be initiating their children’s education programme at our village from the
beginning of August 2009. The programme is based specifically on stimulating and developing
children to be aware of themselves, animals, community life, people, plants and the seasons. Global
Vision is staffed by volunteers from all over the world and their services are provided at no cost
to ourselves. Our sincere thanks go to Shayle Havemann who is their Project Manager, for
including our children in their exciting programme.
